Someone once said that art is the”relatively benign by-product” of the act of making art. This rings true to me. I think it’s why we love to watch children being creative. Once they are done MAKING something…they are on to the next adventure. The adults that love them cover the refrigerator with these creations. The children intuitively know that it is the act that makes us feel alive.

All Life…
All Life is valuable. Sounds so trite. It is the truest thing I know. The recent shootings both of innocent citizens and of innocent police is tragic. Families are destroyed. Communities are shaken. I do not understand.
The awe and respect that I feel for life informs the way I try to live my life. Doesn’t this lead us all? How disconnected from their own heart is someone that can take another’s life? I have only questions. I have no idea where to go with my anguish. So I am talking to whomever may read this and I am talking to myself.
Fifty Shades of Brown
My friend wanted to knit a scarf for me for my birthday. She asked what was my favorite color and I wasn’t sure. Another friend laughed….she could plainly see that my favorite color is brown. It definitely is. I just never realized it before.
Every thing around me is brown….or some version of brown…or something that looks good with brown. Did you ever notice that EVERYTHING looks beautiful when paired with….brown.
My cousin’s young son got a gift of brightly colored clay. He took the red and blue and yellow and green and mashed them together until finally he had something that looked like clay to him. It was brown. Quite pleased with himself he then began to make things.
It’s nice to know what your favorite color is. Did you ever play this game with yourself…like what if you could only have ONE outfit for the rest of your life (jeans & grey t-shirt for me).Or what if you could only eat one thing (great bread & butter). So if I could have only one color..yes..it would be brown.
Aren’t we lucky to have so many choices?
girlfriends
Women have a powerful tool that men will never have.
I finally got a website and I have to say that I am proud of it.I think it represents me and my work well. Now….how do I get anyone to look at it! I invited several of my “younger” girlfriends over and we had a marketing bull session. At one point I said, “So I need to twit my blog and pin it…?”. Well they all laughed…but I think that I’m beginning to understand some of this….and I owe it to my girlfriends. That is what helps make women so strong. We have each other. We help each other. I don’t know what I would do without my girlfriends.
I have my work cut out for me. I need to set up a pinterest account…..Make a page for Susan Ross Pottery on Face book…and then figure out how to tweet!
The point of all of this is to reach people. I think my urns are so special. They have comforted my own family as well as friends. They need to be available out in the world.
I hosted a bachelorette pottery class where all of the guests made a plate for the bride. The afternoon was so much fun and the plates that the bride’s friends made for her took her breath away. Every time that she uses them she thinks of her best buddies and that day we spent together. I want to do that again…
So…welcome to my website…no matter how you got here. Thank my girlfriends.

Falling into winter….
Life is change. Every loss reminds us of other losses. Every new baby a fresh start. Yes, this is how fall finds me this year. Sad at what we’ve lost and so grateful for what we have.
This is a photo of my classic “wedding bowl” and four smaller bowls to go with it. I think every couple would love to receive this as a gift! The serving bowl is perfect for salad , pasta, or stir-fry.
Thanks to my friend Cathy for encouraging me to come up with this lovely gift package. All five pieces may be ordered for $225. I’ll help you pick a color combination for your newlyweds…

Being a Potter
It’s hard to do anything that you love. There is so much to lose.
The benefits are worth it to me. I could not imagine being or doing anything else.
To choose a career is to choose your daily thoughts. Dreams and plans will be full of this “job”. If it is truly something that you love…..then your mind will be full of the things that feed you. If you are not sure, then you probably need to keep looking.
I came upon clay as an accident. Take time to try new things. If you see the world as a wonderful place to explore…you will find a place for yourself.
